1966 NEW JERSEY PRODUCTIONS

Julius LaRosaBeginning on Tuesday, July 19, 1966, Julius LaRosa (right) starred as Sammy Glick at St. John Terrell's Music Circus in Lambertville, New Jersey.  The one-week summer stock production featured Earl Hammond as Al Manheim, Diahn Williams as Laurette Harrington and Natalie Costa as Kit Sargent.  Costa had understudied the character of Laurette on Broadway.  (See the Playbill Cover and Credits.)

Two months later, in September of 1966, The Meadowbrook Dinner Theatre in Cedar Grove, New Jersey presented What Makes Sammy Run? with Gary Crosby as Sammy Glick.  Although Ted Scott as Al Manheim ("absolutely sterling") and Joanna Lester as Kit Sargent ("simply exquisite") received excellent reviews, Crosby (left) was not as well-received:

"Crosby is too YMCA for the part.  He's heavy and has plenty of muscle.  But he has a somnolent, cabaret voice -- the kind that would make olives rotate slowly in a martini glass if the table was stage-side.  Never, however, is he the Glick to loathe and love.  Half of his lines never reached the audience because they were fired seemingly half-heartedly from a weak bow.  Mannerisms he has, and plenty of them.  They keep him up there.  And when the lights hit him right, you find yourself thinking, "My God, that's Bing!"  But then, Bing wouldn't have been a good Glick either."  William Gordon, Newark Evening News.
