In
1965, Joseph Cates directed a lurid little film called Who
Killed Teddy Bear, starring Sal Mineo. Cates, who had also
produced the Broadway production of What Makes Sammy Run, chose Mineo to
star as Sammy Glick in the Toronto production of the musical. Opening on
Monday, December 27th, this first, post-Broadway, production utilized the original Broadway sets, props and
costumes. Since most of the subsequent productions of Sammy were
presented in theatres-in-the-round (Valley Music Theatre, Casa Manana, etc.),
the sets were undoubtedly relegated to a warehouse (or the trash heap) soon after the two week Toronto run.
